Ohio high school football results, Greater Cincinnati updates, Week 1

The high school was welcomed back with Elder’s win at Withrow on Thursday, but that single game was just a taste of a full menu of over 60 more games in the area on Friday and Saturday in the first week of the season.

In Week 1 of the high school football season, the rest of the Greater Catholic League-South travels to the Greater Miami Conference, which also features the reignited rivalry between Moeller and Princeton. In Indiana, East Central and Lawrenceburg face off for their annual duel, while Covington Catholic and Ryle face off in Northern Kentucky.

The road to the championships begins in Week 1, and the slate of games is sure to pave the way for another exciting high school football season.

Sam Wiles scored on a 4-yard touchdown run for Lakota West to tie the Lakota West-St. Xavier game at 7-7. Nathan Verax found Landon Lorms in the back corner of the end zone and Lorms made a spectacular catch to tie the Ryle-Covington Catholic game at 7-7.

St. Xavier took an early lead over Lakota West. The Bombers blocked a punt and Ja’Kobe Clapper returned the ball 26 yards to the Firebirds’ 8-yard line. One play later, Chase Herbstreit ran the ball in for an 8-yard touchdown. A converted PAT put the Bombers up 7-0.

Covington Catholic scored the first touchdown on a 14-yard touchdown run by quarterback Cash Harney. The PAT made it through the updates and put the Colonels up 7-0.

Princeton took an early lead with a 7-yard touchdown run by quarterback De’Angelo Birch against Moeller, increasing the lead to 7-0.

Fifteen real-time minutes into Week 1, both St. X vs. Lakota West and Ryle vs. Covington Catholic are scoreless. The Bombers and Firebirds traded punts early on, and a long Ryle gain was wiped out by an illegal man-positioning penalty.

This afternoon it was announced that the 5,000-seat Pat Mancuso Field was sold out for perhaps the biggest game on the schedule tonight between Moeller and Princeton.

Yes, even the first week of high school football can produce major, historic rivalries.

The King of the Block is renewed for the regular season and will face old rivals Moeller and Princeton after a 16-year hiatus. In the Miami Valley Conference, Cincinnati Country Day and Summit Country Day will meet in the Country Day Cup. The Cincinnati Country Day Nighthawks were victorious in last year’s meeting.

Week 1 also features a battle of potential state tournament teams. The Battle for the Paddle sees Waynesville travel to Clinton-Massie, a year after Clinton-Massie won the rivalry 38-8 before both teams made the postseason.

You can also learn about other upcoming rivalry games and the history of some classic neighborhood games that are no longer played every season.

Who did the Enquirer writers pick to win the top games of the first week?

As kickoff for the first Friday of the 2024 high school football season approaches, take the time to look at the week’s top games and see who the Enquirer writers predict will win each game. All five writers started the season 1-0 after Elder’s win at Withrow.

Elder opens the season with a 28-6 win at Withrow on Thursday

Although Elder is led by second-year quarterback Kaden Estep, it is the older players who bleed purple and provide the winning culture that Elder displays each season.

Withrow took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a 92-yard touchdown run by Quinton Simmons, but responded with a touchdown in each quarter to win 28-6. Senior Maddox Arnold scored two points, while senior Christopher Paff caught two balls from Estep for points.

Next week, Elder has its first of seven home games, hosting West Catholic of Michigan. Withrow will be looking for his first win at Alter.
