According to an insurance study, Ohio has the second-highest rate of speeding tickets in history.

The state ranks second and is among the top three states with the most speeding tickets. According to a report by insurance agency Insurify, 7.8% of Ohio drivers were issued a speeding ticket in 2024. That’s almost double the national average of 4.1%.

“Repeated violations or driving significantly over the speed limit can result in a third or fourth degree misdemeanor, $500 fines and up to 60 days in jail,” the website says, mentioning that there were 27,676 speeding accidents in 2023, resulting in 338 deaths and 1,344 serious injuries. The average comprehensive insurance rate in Ohio is $150 per month, but the report says the cost rises to $222 for drivers convicted of speeding.

Why are there so many speeding tickets in Ohio?

Traffic cameras may be the reason for the high number of speeding tickets. According to the report, the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) uses traffic cameras to identify speeding drivers.

OSHP Lt. Nathan E. Dennis told Insurify, “(A data-driven approach) allows each patrol unit to be proactive in monitoring areas they identify as higher risk for crashes or crash-causing violations.”

The use of state traffic cameras was not without criticism.

After just five months, Insurify says, the cameras in Peninsula, Ohio, resulted in 8,900 tickets and $560,000 in fines and fees, even though the village has a population of just 536. Drivers have pointed out that the traffic cameras wrongly ticketed them, and it costs $100 to contest a speeding ticket in court – a price some drivers say they can’t afford.

The report also mentioned that the state legislature is considering a bill (House Bill 333) that would ban quotas for arrests and subpoenas to law enforcement, the Columbus Dispatch reported.
