Ohio State honors Archie Griffin with honorary street signs

Ohio State has found another way to honor former running back Archie Griffin on the 50th anniversary of his first of two Heisman Trophy wins.

In addition to a statue that will be unveiled at Ohio Stadium on Aug. 30, the day before the Buckeyes open their 2024 season against Akron, Ohio State has installed honorary street signs designating Tuttle Park Place, the street east of Ohio Stadium, as “Archie Griffin Drive.”

Each Archie Griffin Drive street sign features a photo of Griffin carrying a football during an Ohio State game. The street signs appear at each intersection of Tuttle Park Place between Annie and John Glenn Boulevard and Lane Avenue.

An Ohio State spokesman confirmed Friday that “Archie Griffin Drive” is a “permanent, honorary designation. The associated addresses in the postal service and 911 system will not change.”

Griffin, a Columbus native, will also be the icing on the cake for the Ohio State Marching Band when they perform “Script Ohio” during halftime of the Buckeyes’ season opener against Akron.

Griffin had 5,589 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns at Ohio State and received more than 450 first-place votes in each of his Heisman Trophy wins in 1974 and 1975.

Griffin played seven years in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals and later served as OSU’s assistant athletic director and president of the OSU Alumni Association.
