Ohio Turnpike waives late fees

BEREA, Ohio — The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission has announced that it is suspending all Ohio BMV late fees, collection fees and registration holds to give drivers a chance to adjust to the new tolling system.

The Ohio Turnpike said it made the decision after receiving a flood of calls about unpaid toll bills.

The highway switched to a new system in April and new toll booths were built. The changes allowed E-ZPass drivers to pass through the toll booths without having to stop. To avoid unpaid toll bills, drivers should do the following:

If you do not have E-ZPass, you should:

  • Follow the signs above you
  • Drive through the correct toll road in both lanes
  • Stop at the entrance to take a toll card
  • Pay the toll at the exit with cash or credit card

If you have an E-ZPass, you should:

  • Properly install the E-ZPass transponder on the windshield. (Numerous toll booths designed to detect an E-ZPass have been added to the new open-road tolling system, so waving an E-ZPass by hand is ineffective and unsafe.)
  • Keep your online account up to date, including vehicle registration number(s), a valid credit card, and full contact information and email address

If you would like to discuss your bills, go to ezpassoh.com, click on “Contact” and submit the online form.
