OhioHealth Grant Medical Center receives Magnet® designation for fifth consecutive year

OhioHealth Grant Medical Center has received Magnet recognition for the fifth consecutive year, a testament to its continued commitment to quality nursing practice. The American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes healthcare organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence. This qualification is the highest national honor for professional nursing practice.

Group of Grant Nurses - VerticalOnly 9.6% of hospitals in the United States have received the Magnet designation, and only 1% have received this designation five or more times. OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital And OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital currently also have the designation Magnet.

Grant Medical Center received the Magnet designation for the first time in 2005.

“Grant nurses are empowered to improve the quality of nursing care and provide excellent, evidence-based care to all patients,” said Le-Ann Harris, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, Grant’s chief nursing officer. “Excellence is at the core of our Grant culture and this external recognition of our commitment to patient care is a great honor. While this recognition may have been nursing-led, all Grant employees contributed. Magnet recognition is a source of pride for all of us.”

“Receiving Magnet recognition once was a huge accomplishment and an incredible source of pride for our nurses,” said Shellie Scribner, MSN RN NPD-BC, Grants Manager for Nursing Excellence and Director of the Magnet Program. “But receiving this award five times underscores the foundation of excellence and values that drive our nurses to provide exceptional care to all people through experiences that earn lifelong trust.”

Research shows that Magnet recognition provides concrete benefits to healthcare organizations and their communities, including:

  • Higher patient satisfaction with communication with nursing staff, availability of help and receipt of discharge information
  • Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower rate of rescue failure
  • Higher job satisfaction among nursing staff
  • Fewer nurses report intention to quit

The Magnet designation is the gold standard for excellence in nursing and is considered by the public when evaluating healthcare facilities. The annual presentation of the “Best Hospitals in America” by the U.S. News & World Report includes the Magnet designation as an evaluation criterion for the quality of inpatient care.

To receive initial Magnet recognition, organizations must complete a rigorous and lengthy process that requires broad involvement from leadership and staff. This process includes an electronic application, written patient documentation, an on-site visit, and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.

Healthcare organizations must reapply for Magnet recognition every four years based on compliance with Magnet concepts and demonstrated improvements in patient care and quality. An organization reapplying for Magnet recognition must provide documented evidence demonstrating how staff have maintained and improved Magnet concepts, performance, and quality during the four-year period since the last recognition.
