Olympic swimmers use this unexpected pantry ingredient to get ‘glass hair’

There was little more magical about this year’s Olympics than watching synchronized swimmers from around the world dance on water (and under water, too). As impressive as the underwater moonwalk is, we’re really impressed by the “glass hair” the swimmers are able to maintain during their complex routines.

What’s the secret to her glassy, slicked-back hair? Turns out, it’s an ingredient you probably have in your pantry.

In an interview with K5 News from Seattle, Washington, Team USA synchronized swimmer Keana Hunter revealed that they use a technique that involves Knox, a type of gelatin.

“People wouldn’t really think about it, but it’s actually Knox gelatin. Those are the packets you use when you make Jell-O or cheesecake. And we only use the unflavored ones because we don’t want to smell funny,” Hunter revealed.

She further explained that they mix the gelatin with hot water until it reaches a honey-like consistency. Then they tie their hair into a tight bun.

If you want to wash out the homemade hair gel, Hunter recommends using plenty of hot water, allowing the shampoo to work, and using a “strong comb.”

And if you found gelatin bizarre, swimmers once used Vaseline to keep their hair smooth and glassy. Although it served its purpose, it was a mess to wash out.

Well, it looks like Jell-O shots are being put on hold this weekend in favor of glass hair.
