Omaha officials say repairs to Hitchcock Pool are on schedule

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – The first part of the renovations to Omaha’s Hitchcock Pool is complete, including the removal of the baby pool and the 32-foot triple diving board. Now the city is focusing on what’s left.

The 50-year-old swimming pool has been closed for two summers now. The city is working to make it better and safer for the public.

“We believe there will be more for a youth audience,” said Matthew Kalcevich, director of Omaha Parks and Recreations. “So we’re really trying to figure out how we can maximize that opportunity there.”

On Tuesday, the Omaha City Council approved $595,300 from the American Rescue Plan Act to fund the remaining repairs to the pool.

This includes painting the pool, roof repairs and any necessary interior work.

“In this vision, there will be new diving boards, a climbing wall and a zip line,” Kalcevich said.

Kalcevich expects the renovations will keep the pool open for decades to come, and said that fortunately, this summer’s storms did not put a damper on her plans.

“When you look after a 50-year-old swimming pool, there are always problems and that is the challenge, but it is exciting that we are investing and taking on some of the work here.”

The Hitchcock Pool is expected to reopen in summer 2025.
