One bite! Dave Portnoy reviews five pizzerias in Ocean County

After a late July visit that included stops at nearly a dozen pizzerias in Monmouth and Ocean County, Dave Portnoy’s One Bite Pizza reviews are all points scored.

The opinionated pizza critic, who rates pizzas on a scale of 1 to 10 and shares his thoughts with more than 1 million followers on YouTube, gave both The Sauce in Oceanport and Zachary’s Restaurant in West Long Branch an 8.1, Gigi’s New York Style Pizza in Sea Bright a 7.4, Salerno’s Pizzeria & Restaurant in Hazlet a 7.3 and Alternate Ending Beer Co. in Aberdeen a 7.2.

On the Shore, he received the highest ratings for Brooklyn Square in Jackson, which received an 8.9 in 2020, Federici’s Family Restaurant in Freehold Borough, which received an 8.8 in 2020, and Nunzio’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant in Long Branch, which received an 8.6 in 2021.

The score: 7.4

What he said: “Well, I wish it was a little crispier. This is good. Really good pizza.”

Joey Tomato’s, Point Pleasant Beach

The score: 6.9

What he said: “It’s not bad. The dough is exactly what I would expect from a boardwalk pizza. Doughy… it’s hot boardwalk pizza. I think it’s better than you’d expect.”

Martell’s, Point Pleasant Beach

The score: 7.1

What he said: “This one is thinner, this one is doughier (a reference to Joey Tomato’s). It depends on your mood. They’re both 6.9, but I don’t want to give them a tie.”

BLVD Pizza, Surf City

The score: 7.9

What he said: “Looks good. Great chassis. Amazing chassis. Very good, I like it. It’s like a super good pizza, right on the edge of greatness.”

Surf City Pizza

The score: 6.2

What he said: “To me, this looks like a beach pizza. Boardwalk pizza, beach pizza – whatever you want to call it, that’s it. That’s exactly what I expected.”
