A man is dead after a barricade fight with the Columbus Division of Police that lasted more than five hours on Sunday morning.

According to an NBC4 report reportPolice initially responded to reports of burglary around 8 a.m. after hearing gunshots at an apartment in the 1500 block of Worthington Street. The armed suspect fled the scene but was later found nearby where he was verbally ordered multiple times to drop his weapon. When he refused, officers fired their weapons, but the suspect eluded police by entering an apartment building in the 100 block of West 8th Avenue.

While officers were searching the apartment, they reportedly fired more shots when they discovered the suspect in his hiding place. report states that neither the suspect nor officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire that occurred prior to 9:00 a.m., and the suspect was pronounced dead at 1:15 p.m. His cause of death is currently unknown.

University spokesman Dan Hedman confirmed that Ohio State Police assisted in the pursuit, but the Columbus Division of Police remains the lead agency.
