Maybe you can’t wait for the kids to go back to school – but not if they come home with scratchy hands.
The thought of head lice terrifies parents around the world, and treatment can be expensive: sprays and products cost around £8 a bottle.
Here are some ways to keep the critters away without spending a fortune…
FIRST LOOK: Check for lice if you notice your child scratching his head more often than normal.
As soon as you discover head lice, take action.
The most cost-effective method for removing lice and their eggs is to use a special fine-toothed comb.
Superdrug’s own brand comb costs £2.06.
It should be applied to wet hair and worked in sections to cover the entire head.
Apply additional conditioner to make your child more comfortable.
Remove any lice or eggs from the comb after each stroke.
The NHS recommends repeating the process a second time.
On the first, fifth, ninth and 13th days, use a wet comb to catch newly hatched head lice.
CHECK EVERYONE: If discovered, everyone living in the household should be examined and treated.
However, you do not need to wash bedding or items such as hats with hot water, as the lice will not come off the head until they die.
PREVENTION: Prevention is always better than cure.
If your child has long hair, tie it back so that there are no loose strands lying around. This will make it more difficult for lice to be transmitted.
The NHS does not recommend any repellents for head lice.
These products can also be expensive (around £7 per bottle) and may not work.
However, some sources claim that scents such as lavender, tea tree, peppermint and eucalyptus can repel lice.
If you already have these essential oils at home, you can try adding a few drops to a spray bottle filled with water.
The cost of making the solution is minimal and you won’t have to spend anything if you spray your child with it every day before school starts.
