Panama City Commission examines plans to replace Marina Civic Center

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – The Panama City Commission has begun considering the future of the city’s civic center site.

Although there is no concrete plan yet for what will replace the Marina Civic Center in Panama City, the commission has begun to solicit interest in that project and the Martin Theater.

According to Commissioner Brian Grainger, the hope is that once the projects are completed, a company will take over and operate them.

This would allow the commission to focus time, energy and money on other city projects, he said.

“We showed them all the possible locations where we could put a potential new performing arts center, and I think the conversations went pretty well. There’s nothing on the table right now, but we showed them what we had. They seemed to like it. They can run their numbers and then come to us and say if one location is a better fit than another or what size facility would be good for us. But we told them it has to be self-sustaining; the city doesn’t have to put any money into it,” Grainger said.

The city has not yet announced a date for when demolition of the community center will begin.
