Panel discussion of TV hair and makeup designers for the Emmy nominees

Three celebrated, Emmy-nominated hair and makeup designers take us behind the scenes of their shows and careers, revealing their favorite part of the design process, from pre-production to principal photography.

In an exclusive video roundtable interview with Gold Derby as part of our panel “Meet the Experts: TV Makeup and Hair,” the head of special makeup effects for “Fallout” said Jake GarberHead hairdresser of the department “The Gilded Age” Sean Flanigan and chief make-up artist of the “True Detective: Night Country” department Peter Schwerter King discuss their love for their craft. Garber kicks off our lively discussion by noting that his favorite aspect of the design process is “the arrival of the first check,” which draws a big laugh from King. The “Fallout” prosthetics designer shares that his favorite part of his job is “trying to see what can establish itself on the actor’s ‘screen.'” Before a series has a firm grip on its talent, design ideas are just “whirlwinds in the head,” but he says once he knows who he’s going to be working with – Walton Goggins such as The Ghoul from “Fallout” – then “he can really sit down and get started with it.”

King says that while he loves everything he does, “research” comes first. “I love making historical films,” he says. He finds visits to the V&A, the Victoria and Albert Museum, particularly inspiring. “I could spend weeks there, but when you’re preparing for a film or TV series, you don’t have time for weeks.” Garber agrees, adding, “I love going to museums… it’s a treat.”

Flanigan joins in praising the research, saying it’s “definitely fun.” Before production on the current season of “The Gilded Age” ramped up, the hairdresser “visited the National Portrait Gallery” in London and was “just in heaven.” “That’s really where I find my inspiration,” the designer explains, because it’s “so visual” and because they have so many fabulous “old portraits and paintings.” He also says that once he gets immersed in online research, he’s “up all night.” “Absolutely,” agrees King.
