Parking garage at the centre of the WSMV4 investigation under new management

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A downtown parking garage that has been the focus of several WSMV4 investigations will soon be under new management. The change comes after WSMV4 Investigator Courtney Allen discovered dozens of suspected abandoned cars taking up parking spaces at the Public Square Garage downtown.

SP+ is the current subcontractor for managing the garage that left the cars there, but recently sent an email to all parking permit holders informing them that a new company will take over the garage from Wednesday.

The management shakeup came after we discovered more than 30 dust-covered cars with flat tires and no license plates taking up some of the cheapest parking spots downtown in the garage. After asking questions, SP+ put signs on the cars demanding they be removed.

Then a few weeks ago, we uncovered more problems, including an operational loophole that allowed people to exit without paying, no matter how long their car was parked there. When we asked about it, the Nashville Downtown Partnership, which operates the garage on behalf of the city, told us they were in the process of transitioning to a new provider. “NDP is in the process of transitioning to a new operating contract with a new provider,” NDP’s Alexis Bell said in an email on July 25. “As of May 7, the service provider has employed one parking attendant for the entire staff. The current provider will fulfill the remainder of the contract on that schedule.”

We now know that the new provider is Parking Management Company, or PMC. According to its website, PMC is based in Nashville and recently announced a partnership with the Titans to serve as the exclusive parking provider for Nissan Stadium. We asked PMC what changes they are making to the Public Square Garage to improve operations there. We are awaiting a response.

We asked NDP if the change in provider was due to issues we discovered at the garage. “The new parking management provider for the Metro Courthouse Garage (PMC, effective August 2024) is the result of Metropolis’ acquisition of SP Plus,” Bell said in an email Monday. “This acquisition required SP Plus to cease managing properties in several markets across the U.S.”
