Part of Calgary Airport will be closed for 18 months to repair hail damage

The Calgary Airport Authority has announced that Concourse B at Calgary International Airport (YYC) will remain closed for at least 18 months to repair damage caused by a massive hailstorm earlier this month.

No guests or airport staff were injured in the August 5 storm. Commercial aircraft at YYC and homes and vehicles in parts of North Calgary were also damaged. The total cost of repairs is not yet known.

“Initial investigations have shown that Concourse B in the domestic terminal building sustained significant damage – first from golf ball-sized hail that punctured the roof membrane and then from subsequent heavy rain that penetrated the building,” said Chris Miles, chief operating officer of the Calgary Airport Authority, on Wednesday.

“We have completed the initial renovation work and are now developing a comprehensive plan to repair the roof and interior of Hall B.”

Despite the closure of YYC Concourse B and Gates (Gates 31-40), airport officials expect there will be no impact to travelers or airport operations during the restoration work.

“We are pleased to report that there should be no impact to our guests and passengers as we have been able to operate all flights through other parts of the terminal. We are open for business,” said Chris Dinsdale, President and CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority.
