Patriots and Jerod Mayo are convinced that Drake Maye is 100 percent ready to start

The Patriots might be closer to putting Drake Maye in the starting lineup than we previously thought.

New England returned to practice on Wednesday, which gave reporters an opportunity to ask Jerod Mayo about his quarterbacks. When asked about Maye, Mayo continued to weigh in on his rookie playmaker.

“One hundred percent. I think he’s ready to run a huddle,” Mayo said when asked if Maye was ready, according to a video provided by the team. “… (but) it’s still a competition and Jacoby (Brissett) is still QB1.”

Mayo has been undecided all summer, but in a way that could end up being a positive. New England brought in Brissett as a starter, and that was the message from the beginning, but when it became clear that Maye isn’t as far gone as many previously thought, the Patriots have done a U-turn.

“I think everyone can see Drake’s confidence growing, and everyone can see Jacoby going out here and doing a good job overall,” Mayo said.

Mayo expects to know definitively who his starter will be by cut-down day on Tuesday.

“That doesn’t mean I’ll tell you.”
