Patriots fans clamor for Drake Maye after Jacoby Brissett is brought down

The New England Patriots are taking it slow with Drake Maye, but their fans don’t want to see him on the bench. Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett hasn’t wowed them much this summer, and it may only be a matter of time before he loses his spot in the starting lineup.

Fans chanted “Start Drake Maye” after Brissett missed an easy pass during training camp, via Patriots on CLNS Media.

Brissett had veteran wide receiver Jalen Reagor free in the end zone on a pitch-and-catch pass drill, but couldn’t find the target. Although it was only one play, it’s an unflattering outing for a ninth-year signal-caller.

Brissett is still on the first team, but that could change if Maye puts pressure on him in the preseason. The former North Carolina product is expected to play on Thursday against the Carolina Panthers.

According to Phil Perry of NBC Sports, neither quarterback has stood out in practice this week.

“After a tough blocking practice for Maye on Monday, it wasn’t the second unit offense that allowed the Patriots defense to get sacks. It was apparently the first blocking group for Brissett that stumbled more frequently,” Perry reported. “Brissett went 13-of-20 with four sacks in the contest on Day 11. Maye, meanwhile, went 8-of-14 with an interception and a fumbled snap.”

The Panthers’ game will be crucial, as Maye is expected to back up Brissett in the contest. Unless Maye goes on a winning streak this summer, Brissett will have the edge for now.

New England will be in no hurry to throw Maye to the wolves, as it is more important to think long-term with their prized player. However, the rookie will get every chance to prove himself this preseason and will likely take over midseason if the team stumbles. The Patriots are not expected to be able to compete this year, which provides a pressure-free environment for Maye to develop.
