The New England Patriots have received some bad injury news, and it could impact a decision about Drake Maye’s immediate future. And maybe Maye will be ready without all of his equipment.
During Sunday night’s preseason game against the Washington Commanders, Maye pulled off an impressive finish, according to NFL news on X.
“No shoe, no problem. Maye still made the pass.”

The piece elicited a few laughs from NBC presenter Cris Collinsworth.
“There’s the shoe,” Collinsworth said. “Throw it off. No big deal. Let’s just go ahead and throw this ball for a first down. What the heck?”
According to The Sports Hub via ESPN and nbcsports.com, Maye had already stepped up his efforts to earn a starting spot.
“I think in the beginning he was just trying to adjust and just be a good teammate,” Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said. “Now he’s competing for the starting quarterback spot; he’s really stepped up his preparation and performance on the field.”

But Mayo has not yet made a decision on moving Jacoby Brissett from the first team.
“We’re going to stick to the (development) plan,” Mayo said. “It may not be a popular plan. But we’re doing what we think is right for the organization, not just in the short term, but also in the long term.”
According to a team transcript, Mayo said he was looking for mental toughness and competitiveness in his quarterback, nesn.com reported.
“I can’t sit here and tell you, unless it’s like a Philip Rivers release where you’re like, ‘Man, that release is kind of weird,'” Mayo said. “I don’t get into the technical details. For me, when evaluating a quarterback or any player, but especially the quarterback, they have to be mentally tough. And they have to be able to bounce back from all the adversity that they’re bound to face.”
