Four years after the departure of legendary quarterback Tom Brady, the New England Patriots may have found a worthy successor in Drake Maye, the number 3 pick in this year’s NFL Draft.

For whatever reason, however, Maye was not used particularly well in the season opener last Thursday, completing only three pass attempts while Bailey Zappe, who finished last season as the starter, had 20 pass attempts.

Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal attended the Patriots’ joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday and said some words that sports fans in New England don’t want to hear.

He said the team’s offense looked like a “train wreck” that “got worse as practice went on” and was “horrific.” He also said Maye “feels miles away,” according to Patriots on CLNS Media.

A brave new world begins for the organization: Longtime head coach and de facto general manager Bill Belichick is gone and Jerod Mayo, a former Patriots linebacker, has taken his place.

Rebuilding the NFL is very difficult and usually takes many years to achieve successfully. The franchise has discovered this in recent years.

Maye has put up great numbers over the past two years at the University of North Carolina and was named the 2022 ACC Player of the Year. While he could very well become a great NFL quarterback, that will likely take some time.

One reason for this is the complete lack of usable players in this area as well as an offensive line that is the second worst in the league according to a recent ranking by the Pro Football Network.
