Patriots mourn team doctor Dr. Mark Price

The New England Patriots announced the death of their team physician, Dr. Mark Price, on Sunday. In a statement on behalf of owner Robert Kraft, the organization expressed its condolences to Dr. Price’s family, friends and colleagues.

“It is with deep sadness that we note the passing of Dr. Mark Price, a valued team physician, after a brave battle with cancer,” the statement said.

“Dr. Price became the Patriots’ chief physician and medical director in 2016 and possessed exceptional expertise. His contributions to the health and well-being of our players were invaluable and his commitment to excellence was evident in every aspect of his work.”

Dr. Price was born in 1952 and received his PhD from MIT in 2001. Two years later, he received his MD from Harvard Medical School. As a captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service in combat operations in Afghanistan.

As noted in the Patriots’ statement, Dr. Price became their chief physician and medical director in 2016. He became part of two Super Bowl-winning teams and held his title for a total of seven seasons before being replaced by Dr. Scott Martin in 2022 (but he remained part of the team’s extended medical circle).

In addition to his work with the Patriots, Dr. Price also served as a sports medicine physician and orthopedic surgeon at Mass General Brigham Sports Medicine and as an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at his alma mater, Harvard Medical.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Price’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” the Patriots’ statement said. “His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the lasting impact of his work.”
