Patriots QB Drake Maye took the next step to becoming the team’s starter on Wednesday

Throughout the offseason, the New England Patriots assumed that Jacoby Brissett would be the team’s starting quarterback in their Week 1 game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium.

Brissett started every practice in camp with the offensive line and was the first quarterback to play in New England’s first two preseason games.

But things changed on Wednesday when third-round pick Drake Maye took his first reps with the top offense during team periods in a full-on practice. Although the number of reps was limited, it was an important step in the rookie’s development.

The Patriots only have a few practices and one warm-up game left before roster cuts and the start of the regular season, so Maye doesn’t have much time to snatch the starting spot from Brissett.

At the same time, the veteran has not used his opportunities particularly impressively, so it is not completely out of the question.
