HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry has issued a consumer alert warning citizens to remain vigilant and beware of home repair and renovation scams as hurricanes begin to hit the state. The alert emphasizes that homeowners must do their due diligence and know their rights before entering into contracts or engaging in services.

“Disastrous weather can bring in scammers who try to take advantage of consumer panic to profit,” said Attorney General Henry. “I want Pennsylvania homeowners to know that my office is here for them. Call or email us if you have any questions about contractors, such as whether or not they are registered with our office, and please report suspicious activity and offers to us.”

The Attorney General’s office offers consumers several ways to verify a contractor’s legitimacy. Homeowners can file complaints online, call the office at 1-800-441-2555, or email [email protected]. In addition, a searchable database of registered contractors is available on the office’s website.

Important points for homeowners to consider:

  • Following severe storms, there may be an increase in fraud related to restoration contracts and government loans or grants.
  • Reputable organizations do not demand large sums of money up front and provide written estimates and contracts.
  • Pennsylvania state law requires contractors who have completed renovation work valued at more than $5,000 in the previous year to register with the Attorney General’s Office.

Homeowners are encouraged to take proactive steps such as confirming coverage with their insurance company before signing a contract and obtaining a certificate of completion from their bank or credit union. This certificate ensures that payment to contractors will not be made until the bank approves each phase of work.

By remaining cautious of unsolicited sales calls and large upfront payments, Pennsylvania residents can better protect themselves from potential scams during hurricane season.
