PGA Tour integrates Apple SharePlay into its Apple Vision Pro app

The PGA Tour has integrated Apple SharePlay into its Apple Vision Pro app. The feature launched today with the start of the FedExCup Playoffs and its first-round event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and will be available for all three FedExCup tournaments.

PGA Tour Vision users can FaceTime other fans on the AVP and co-exist in the same app through SharePlay, sharing spatial experiences with their Apple Personas. The app, developed by Quintar, creates 3D table layouts of individual holes with shot lanes for each player, enabling both live and on-demand viewing experiences. PGA Tour Vision was introduced with the debut of the Apple Vision Pro in February.

Matt Mullenthe PGA Tour’s director of product development, said the Tour recognized potential for this multi-user experience when the app was first developed.

“We knew early on that we wanted to go public with the experience we launched,” Mullen said. “But early on and throughout the development cycle, phase two was always about how can we make this a communal or shared experience with someone else.”

The development of SharePlay took about three months. Buddy ScottSVP/Platform, Products & Experience at Quintar. Scott said the SharePlay integration required intensive problem-solving, especially due to the numerous components involved that make PGA Tour Vision such a comprehensive experience.

“We’re managing all of these pieces and all of these things simultaneously in real time,” Scott said. “And that’s a very complex set of messages going back. What we found early on – especially with something as advanced as PGA Tour (Vision) – is that messages could collide and these pieces could get mixed up. So our IP, our technology, actually manages that layer on top of the SharePlay component.”

Mullen said the tour has been pleased with the use of PGA Tour Vision so far. He shared that unlike the typical spike in user traffic around tournaments on other platforms, PGA Tour Vision traffic has been more consistent on a daily basis as people watch replays or start previewing holes on the next competition page. Mullen also added that PGA Tour Vision has encouraged improvements that are now being seen in other experiences, such as more realistic hole layouts in the PGA Tour app or the incorporation of 3D imagery in TV commercials.

“We see it as our innovation space to help us influence how we want to advance our other platforms,” Mullen said.
