Pilot killed in plane crash in Knox County; authorities investigate second crash near Wayne | News

Authorities are investigating two plane crashes that occurred in northeastern Nebraska on Monday that left at least one person dead.

The accidents occurred Monday morning in Knox and Wayne counties.

The Nebraska State Patrol is the lead investigative agency for the Knox County plane crash. Cody Thomas, public relations director for the State Patrol, said the Knox County crash occurred about 4 miles southwest of Crofton around 9:30 a.m.

First responders, including police and Knox County Sheriff’s officials, found the pilot, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The pilot was the only occupant of the plane, a Rans S-19, at the time of the crash. Thomas said the pilot’s name will not be released until family is notified.

The second crash occurred a short time later in a cornfield near 863rd Street and 574th Avenue, northwest of Wayne. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigative agency in this incident. Details of this crash will be released by the Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible, Thomas said.

According to the NTSB, a Piper PA-28-140 was involved in the crash in Wayne County.

The NTSB is investigating both accidents. Police have deployed drones to monitor both accident scenes to assist with the investigation.

Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies, including the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska Game and Parks, Federal Aviation Administration and State Patrol, responded to the crash site in Wayne County.

Investigators are at the scenes of two separate plane crashes that occurred Monday morning in Wayne and Knox counties.

The Nebraska State Patrol said shortly after 11 a.m. that it was working with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration regarding both incidents.

The NTSB newsroom posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the accident occurred in Knox County near Crofton and involved a Rans S-19. The NTSB said Monday afternoon that the Wayne County accident, which occurred in a cornfield south of 863rd Street and west of 574th Avenue, involved a Piper PA-28-140.

Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies, including the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska Game and Parks and the State Patrol, were at the crash site in Wayne County.
