Pittsburgh Steelers vs Detroit Lions

Head coach Dan Campbell said this week that there are about five or six spots left on the roster, but that there are countless other player roles that need to be resolved before the Lions host the Rams on Sept. 8.

There are a number of position battles to keep an eye on today. At the top of the list are the job of backup quarterback, No. 4 wide receiver, No. 3 tight end and long snapper. We’ve seen in years past how a strong performance in the final preseason game can swing a roster spot in a player’s favor.

3. QUARTERBACK SITUATIONS

There are still question marks about the quarterback for the Lions and Steelers, but they are very different situations. Jared Goff is the starter in Detroit, there’s no doubt about that, and we probably won’t see him play today. Hendon Hooker will probably start, as he competed with Nate Sudfeld to be Goff’s replacement during the regular season. It’s another chance for both players to make a lasting impression.

Pittsburgh could still decide whether Russell Wilson or Justin Fields will be the starter in Week 1. The Steelers have lost both preseason games so far and neither Wilson nor Fields have been able to secure the job.

Today will be a good test for Aaron Glenn and the Lions defense, especially if Fields is on the field with his ability to use his legs as a weapon. Fields is the Steelers’ best rusher this preseason.
