Over the past few weeks, there has been speculation that the Google Pixel 9 series will get a new weather app that will also be rolled out to other Pixel devices. The said application is now available for download as an Android Package Kit (APK) on a hosting platform, albeit unofficially. It can be loaded onto the current range of Pixel smartphones. The Pixel Weather app is also said to offer features based on artificial intelligence (AI) – a discovery made during an APK disassembly of the app.

A few days ago, it was first reported that Google is developing a weather app exclusively for Pixel smartphones. Although the app was expected to be unveiled globally with the Pixel 9 series at the Made by Google event on August 13, Android Authority reports that it has already leaked online on application package hosting platform APKMirror.
The new weather app for Pixel devices
According to the report, the Weather app offers features that are familiar from other weather apps, including elements like current weather conditions, wind chill, UV index, visibility, wind speed, humidity, sunrise/sunset times, barometric pressure, and high/low temperatures. In addition, it also has carousels for hourly and 10-day forecasts. The app’s user interface (UI) appears to follow Google’s “Material You” design language.
It also confirms a previous leak that suggested the app could also offer the ability to move maps. Users can move different elements around depending on what they want to see on top. Although this works even without logging in with the Google account, it allows the user to save their current location.
An APK teardown of the Weather app by 9to5Google discovered strings pointing to an alleged AI-powered feature: AI Weather Summaries. Although no details were disclosed, the name of the feature suggests that it will allow the user to generate weather summaries for a selected time period in a specific location. Two other features were also reportedly discovered, namely precipitation notifications and weather forecasts.
Although Google’s Weather app is expected to arrive as a default app on the Pixel 9 series, Gadgets 360 staff was able to install it on older Pixel devices and other smartphones running Android 14. Since the app is not yet officially available, users may experience frequent crashes or performance issues. Changing the temperature unit on our device caused the app to stop responding.
