PlayStation revises DualSense controller app for PC

Key findings

  • PlayStation has updated the firmware update app for the DualSense PC, renaming it “PlayStation Accessories” and improving the user interface and experience.
  • The overhaul also brings support for custom DualSense Edge profiles on PC, a feature that was previously only available on PS5 consoles.

PlayStation has made significant changes to the DualSense Firmware Updater app for PC, such as a revamped user interface and extensive support for the DualSense Edge controller. It’s been over two years since the DualSense PC Updater app was released, so the overhaul is a welcome move from PlayStation.

Thanks to its novel features like haptic feedback, gyro aiming, and adaptive triggers, the DualSense is considered one of the best controllers available today. The controller initially only worked with a PS5, but PlayStation extended the DualSense’s functionality to PC in 2022 with the Firmware Update app. This allows PC users to effortlessly connect their DualSense controllers, use the features in supported games, and update the firmware when needed. In 2023, the DualSense Edge was launched, a specialized version of the standard controller with additional features like swappable stick modules, back buttons, and more.

The new PS5 controller is sold out

The latest DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5 sold out at many retailers across the country within hours of pre-orders beginning.

While most of the DualSense Edge’s features have been compatible with PC since day one, until now only PS5 users have been able to create, edit, and switch custom controller profiles. With PlayStation’s overhaul of the DualSense firmware update app, PC users can now finally create and play around with custom DualSense Edge profiles as well. Additionally, the app has been renamed “PlayStation Accessories” and promises a much improved design and user experience, apparently in an effort to convince more PC gamers to use DualSense controllers with their rigs.

Regardless of the motive, it’s encouraging to see PlayStation releasing the full feature set of the DualSense Edge to PC users. The ability to create, edit and switch controller profiles can be very useful, especially for gamers who enjoy diving into a variety of competitive multiplayer games. The DualSense Edge’s features in particular have been praised by Overwatch2 players on the PS5, so hopefully PC gamers will also see some use in the enthusiast controller.

Despite all of its advantages, the DualSense Edge’s battery life is also one of the controller’s biggest drawbacks due to its significantly smaller battery, so potential buyers should keep in mind that they may always have to use the DualSense Edge wired. Poor battery life aside, the DualSense Edge has a lot to offer PC enthusiasts, especially now that its full feature set is available on the platform.
