Plymouth Argyle has the opportunity to sign more players

Wayne Rooney has said he is happy with the current Plymouth Argyle squad but is always on the lookout for other potential signings.

The Pilgrims have signed six summer players ahead of the 2024/25 championship season, most recently 22-year-old right-back Kornel Szucs from Hungarian Premier League club Kecskemeti for a transfer fee estimated at £400,000.

Ahead of the season-opening game against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday, Rooney said: “I’m happy with my squad but of course if someone becomes available who we think is right for the team then we have space to bring in players so we’re always looking.”

“If that was my squad and the transfer window closes, I would be happy with what I have,” added the Pilgrims head coach, who brought in Nathanael Ogbeta, Darko Gyabi, Muhamed Tijani, Ibrahim Cissoko, Victor Palsson and Szucs in the summer.

Szucs played as a right wing-back for Kecskeméti when they drew 0-0 at home with Fehervar in their first league game of the season on 28 July. They then lost 1-0 away to Ferencvaros last Saturday when the Hungarian Under-21 international left the team after the transfer deal to Argyle was agreed.

Argyle announced the signing of Szucs on Monday and he is fit and ready to play against Sheffield Wednesday. “He’s had a few training sessions with us now,” said Rooney. “He needs to settle in to the city and the team but I think we’ve got a really good player.”

“I’m very happy about the signing. He’s a player who still has a lot of potential, so it’s our job to improve him as well. I’m really happy that we managed to do that because I know he’s attracted real interest from other good clubs.”

Rooney added: “He has completed his pre-season and started the season at his previous club. He started the first game when they drew 0-0. He was about to play the second game and when we did the deal he withdrew. He is fit and can play on Sunday.”
