PPV price for Canelo vs. Berlanga announced

The price for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga pay-per-view fight on September 14 was announced today and is $89.99.

A packed supporting programme

Fans on social media are shocked as they were expecting a cheaper price for the event, which will be broadcast live on DAZN PPV. However, the Canelo-Berlanga match includes some exciting fights. For $89.99, fans get these great fights:

  • Caleb Plant vs Trevor McCumby
  • Eridlandy Lara vs Danny Garcia
  • Rolando “Rolly” Romero vs. Manuel Jaimes

The main argument from fans is that Berlanga was pushed into the title fight against Canelo without fighting a halfway decent opponent, but that’s how it goes these days. Canelo’s last opponent, Jaime Munguia, earned the title shot by fighting losers throughout his entire 10-year career, narrowly defeating 38-year-old Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

The price of premium boxes

People paid $100 to see a washed-up old Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight his best opponent, Manny Pacquiao, on a spartan undercard in 2015, so fans shouldn’t complain if they pay $90 to see Canelo fight ambitious New Yorker Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) on September 14.

Mayweather-Pacquiao was a terrible fight and there are no words to describe how bad the prelims that were put together for this fight were. In comparison, Canelo vs. Berlanga is a very worthwhile fight.

Former IBF super middleweight champion Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) will fight the undefeated McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs) for the interim WBA belt, with the winner of that fight potentially facing Canelo next.

Fans haven’t seen former two-weight world champion Danny Garcia (37-3, 21 KOs) in a few years, and he’s set to challenge Erislandy Lara (30-3-3, 18 KOs) for his WBA middleweight title. It would be impressive if Danny could dethrone the 41-year-old Lara after two years out of the ring.

The spoiled fan base

It’s unclear what price fans were expecting for this card, but they have to understand that an event like this is going to be a little more expensive than average. If fans thought Canelo-Berlanga would be sold in the $70 range or more, they were fooling themselves, because there were too many excellent fights at the event to get a price that low.

Some people are spoiled by the events hosted by His Excellency Turki Alalshikh because he stacks his cards and the prices are in the range of over $70.
