Monessen residents can now view virtual plans for repairs to the Reed Avenue Bridge, known locally as the “Viaduct,” which are being done at no cost to the City of Monessen.

PennDOT District 12, along with the Federal Highway Administration, invites the public to view the virtual plan representation of the district-wide Local Bridge Preservation Project.

The Reed Avenue Bridge project is scheduled to begin in spring 2025 and be completed by fall.

The bridge, built in 1976, is located almost 100 feet above Third Street. It is 390 feet long and 40 feet wide. According to PennDOT, the bridge is in good condition.

Mayor Ron Mozer discussed PennDOT’s possible plans to repair the viaduct at the July 25 council meeting.

The scope of work includes repairing the bridge deck and walkways, replacing the expansion dam seals, installing a new latex concrete overlay on the bridge deck, applying a protective coating to the bridge deck, walkways and barriers, repairing the bridge fence, cleaning and lubricating the bridge bearings, and painting the ends of the steel beams.

The existing road width will remain the same.

The following traffic diversions will apply during construction work:

• Northbound traffic uses Ninth Street, then Route 906 north (Schoonmaker Avenue), First Street, McKee Avenue and Rostraver Street.

• Southbound traffic uses Sixth Street, Knox Avenue, Ninth Street, Tenth Street, South Route 906 (Donner Avenue), First Street, McKee Avenue and Rostraver Street.

Pedestrian traffic across the bridge will be maintained during construction.

PennDOT expects the full closure to last approximately two months.
