Price stability for Costa Rican melons on the European market

Melones del Sol, a family business founded in Costa Rica in 1998, has established itself as a leader in melon export to Europe. Co-founder Marbeth Venegas told us in an exclusive interview how, despite the current challenges, they have managed to remain competitive in a market as demanding as the European one. “Exporting is easy, but retaining customers and staying in the market is the most difficult aspect,” says Venegas, reflecting on the philosophy behind the company’s success.

The company owns 170 hectares where it grows different varieties of melons, including yellow melons and seedless watermelons. It focuses mainly on the European market and has customers in the UK, France, the Netherlands, Denmark and Italy. Although it is a relatively small company, its focus on product quality and a personalized service has enabled it to build strong business relationships with a diverse portfolio of customers. “We try to offer a unique service that is tailored to each customer,” says Venegas.

One of the most notable aspects of Melones del Sol is its commitment to quality and sustainable practices. With almost 20 years of experience in the use of biological pest control, the company has developed its own laboratory for the reproduction of microorganisms, which allows it to work on soil regeneration and health. “We are very concerned with doing things well. It is important to us that people have a decent job and that the environment is protected,” says Venegas, underlining the importance of environmental responsibility in their business model.

In addition, Melones del Sol has various certifications that guarantee compliance with the most demanding standards on the European market, including GlobalG.AP, Rainforest Alliance and, more recently, LEAF.(The brand has obtained LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) certification, required by British supermarket Tesco. “We are the first melon producer in Costa Rica to receive LEAF certification,” says Venegas, underlining the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront in terms of quality and sustainability.

The export season for Melones del Sol runs from January to April, a period in which Costa Rica competes mainly with Honduras and Panama. Despite adverse weather conditions and the effects of climate change, Venegas is optimistic about the future. The company has no plans to expand its cultivation area in the short term; it remains focused on improving product quality and customer service. “Our goal is to grow in the near future, but we will only do that when the market conditions are right,” says Venegas.

In 2024, Melones del Sol exported 240 containers of melons and watermelons, a figure that the company hopes to maintain in 2025. Price stability and confidence in the quality of production are key factors. Venegas believes that the European market will continue to be their main outlet, as they trust in the loyalty of their customers and the reputation they have built over the years.

Melones del Sol is an example of how a family business can succeed in international markets while maintaining a focus on quality, personal service and sustainability.
