Relief pitcher Chasen Shreve will become a free agent after his engagement with the Colorado Rockies

According to the Colorado Rockies’ official transaction log, left-handed pitcher Chasen Shreve opted to become a free agent on Wednesday.

The Rockies designated Shreve for transfer on Saturday to free up space on the 26- and 40-man rosters for right-handed pitcher Dakota Hudson, whose contract was acquired from Triple-A Albuquerque. Rather than accept a transfer to the minor leagues, Shreve has decided to return to the open market.

Shreve didn’t last long in Denver, having only signed a minor league contract on August 4. He was called up to the major leagues on August 6 and made a single scoreless relief pitch against the New York Mets on August 7.

Before being signed by the Rockies, Shreve spent a few weeks in the New York Yankees’ minor league system. He began 2024 on a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers, but neither they nor the Yankees gave him a major league opportunity that season.

In 31 minor league appearances this year, Shreve has a record of 4-1 with a 2.62 ERA, a 0.845 WHIP and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

If Shreve wants to be eligible for the playoffs, he must join another club before August 31. The 34-year-old left-hander has never made the playoffs in his 11 years in the MLB.

Shreve made his major league debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2014 and played for the Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds over the next decade. He has played over 50 games in four different seasons, most recently in 2023.

In his career, Shreve is 22-14 with a 3.96 ERA, a 1.339 WHIP, 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings, and a 3.5 WAR.
