Renowned surgeon Cecil Brown speaks at Habersham Senior Center

It’s care the old-fashioned way, when a doctor took the time to talk with you about your concerns, life experiences and preventative care. That’s what you can expect on Thursday, August 29, at the Habersham County Senior Center. The event is sponsored by Stephens County Hospital and begins at noon. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. Be sure to make reservations, then enjoy presentations by Dr. Cecil Brown, a board-certified general surgeon and surgical critical care nurse.

Stephens County Hospital received the Center of Excellence designation. To receive advanced certification, a hospital must meet the core requirements of the Disease-Specific Care Manual, which includes three main components: standards, clinical practice guidelines, and performance measurement. To receive advanced certification (like Stephens County Hospital), the core requirements must be met, plus additional clinical-specific requirements.

The Center of Excellence certification is one of the reasons Dr. Brown came to Stephens County. Dr. Brown worked as a trauma surgeon for 9 years before deciding to live in Toccoa and live a slower lifestyle. He receives rave reviews from his patients. His Google rating is 5 stars. Not only do his patients love him, but his staff, both in the office and in the surgical department, enjoy working with him and it shows. He is from a small town in Georgia and went to school and completed his residency in Macon, Georgia. He and his wife will celebrate their 32nd wedding anniversary on September 26th.

After his talk, Dr. Brown invites anyone interested to sit down and ask any questions that are on your mind. Maybe you need surgery, think you could change a few things to lower your blood pressure or lose weight, or just need an opinion. The Habersham Senior Center, 217 Scoggins Drive, Demorest, Georgia, is the place to do that.

One of the benefits of having surgery at Stephens County Hospital is not only the excellent care, but also the SWING bed, which allows patients to stay and receive the rehabilitation they need rather than being transferred to a rehabilitation center as is the case at larger hospitals.

Other areas will be covered as well. Brittany London, Chief of Surgery and Coordinator of the Total Joint Center of Excellence at Stephens County Hospital, will discuss the benefits of improving quality of life through knee and hip replacements. London is a wife, mother, entrepreneur, dog lover and avid swimmer.

The Stephens County team is Joint Commission-certified and specializes in total joint replacement using the latest technology, treatment and surgical techniques. Total joint replacement is a surgical procedure that involves removing parts of an arthritic or damaged joint and replacing them with a metal, plastic or ceramic device called a prosthesis. The prosthesis is designed to mimic the motion of a normal, healthy joint, allowing you to return to your daily activities and regain your range of motion.

London has been working as a nurse since 2011 and completed her Master of Science in Executive Nursing. She has a wide range of experience in the emergency department, critical care, case management and perioperative services. She is available to speak with you to discuss possible care options.

Hannah Goodbar, occupational therapist and director of the rehabilitation department, is one of the main reasons Stephens County is able to continue post-surgery rehabilitation in the hospital. Goodbar has worked at Stephens County Hospital for over 15 years, including 12 years as an occupational therapist and 3 years as a manager. She earned her master’s degree in occupational therapy from Brenau University. Goodbar is also available to discuss options with participants.

Learning, listening and living well are the themes of Thursday’s luncheon at Habersham Senior Center. Make it a priority. You won’t regret it.
