RepAir Carbon US Inc. and C-Questra launch EU’s first onshore CO2 removal project

RepAir Carbon US Inc. and C-Questra have partnered to launch the European Union’s first onshore direct air capture and storage (DACS) project in Grandpuits, France. This collaboration represents a major milestone in Europe’s decarbonization efforts and aims to reduce the continent’s dependence on costly and complex midstream and offshore carbon infrastructure.

This sets a new standard for efficient and scalable CO2 removal in Europe.“, explained Jean-Philippe Hiegel, Head of Strategy and Growth at RepAir Carbon. RepAir’s innovative technology, which reduces energy consumption by 70% compared to conventional DAC solutions, consumes only 0.6 MWh per tonne of CO2 captured – significantly less than the 2.5 MWh required by most competitors. This efficiency removes a major barrier to the widespread adoption of DACS.

C-Questra, an independent carbon storage startup, will provide the necessary know-how to store the captured CO2.”Our partnership with RepAir allows us to demonstrate Europe’s ability to develop onshore direct air capture and storage projects. This is important to offset the momentum created by the US Inflation Act and re-establish Europe as a frontrunner in the CDR space.“, said Walid Sinno, Founder and CEO of C-Questra.

The project is strategically located in the Île-de-France region, where it will also develop local manufacturing opportunities, create green jobs and lay the foundation for similar DACS projects across Europe. It aims to remove 100,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere annually by 2030, with plans to increase this to megatons by 2035.

This groundbreaking project is in line with France’s new Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) strategy, which sets ambitious targets for CO2 removal by 2030. It is also designed to take advantage of European funding opportunities, such as the Innovation Fund, which has not yet supported a Direct Air Capture project.

As RepAir Carbon continues to establish itself as a pioneer in the DAC space, this partnership not only promotes European competitiveness in carbon removal but also paves the way for future innovation and sustainability.
