Republicans warn Donald Trump: “Be politically serious, otherwise you could lose”

While some Republicans urged their candidate to focus more on inflation, influential far-right figures called for him to be more aggressive on immigration and crime.

Laura Loomer, a far-right journalist, said “weak” proxies would destroy the campaign and warned that Trump must “change FAST, because we cannot talk about election fraud for the next four years.”

Candace Owens, another influencer, spoke of a “MAGA civil war” and told Trump: “I’m just not sure who’s driving the MAGA bus anymore. You’re losing the support of the people who believed in you… You need those people.”

This week, Democratic delegates will meet in Chicago for the national convention, where they will hear speeches from Mrs Harris, Mr Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

Ms Harris will face opposition from up to 100,000 pro-Palestinian protesters who will hold mass demonstrations in the city against the Biden administration’s support for Israel.

Police have said the event will not be a repeat of the 1968 convention, which was also held in Chicago and disrupted by Vietnam War protesters. Trump will campaign in Michigan, Pennsylvania and North Carolina during the convention.
