Results and recaps from the first week of the OHSAA high school football team in Stark County, Ohio

Week 1 of the high school football season is over. It was a mixed bag for the Stark County teams, with a big out-of-state win being the highlight of the night while several teams suffered tough road losses. Here’s a look at the highlights of the night

Lake Football’s stunning comeback includes a blocked punt and a game-winning 2-point conversion

Lake 36, McKeesport, Pennsylvania 35 (2 OTs)

WOODLAND HILLS, Pennsylvania. — The Blue Streaks overcame a 21-7 second-half deficit to win walk-off style in the second overtime. Ty DeGeorge scored on a 2-point conversion on the second possession of the second overtime and just made it into the end zone behind the block of Charlie Christopher.

Christopher blocked a punt with 1:49 left in regulation, forcing overtime. Korey Datsko-Miller intercepted the blocked punt, scored a touchdown, and the PAT tied the game at 21-21.

Lake scored touchdowns on both possessions in overtime, with DeGeorge carrying the ball out of wildcat mode, the key to both offenses.

Dover Football fights for Green

Dover 28, Green 24

DOVER – Dover scored two goals in the final three minutes, including an onside kick, to beat Green at Crater Stadium.

Justice Hughes’ 7-yard touchdown run gave the Tornadoes a 28-24 lead with 1:03 left in the fourth quarter.

Evan Reed ran for 126 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries for Green. He scored another touchdown as part of his three catches for 58 yards.

Tyson Hunka completed 11 of 16 passes for 128 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.

Benedictine football dominates Canton South from the start

Benedictine 43, Canton South 7

University Heights – Benedictine built a 26-0 lead after the first quarter and never relinquished it as Canton South lost on the road in its season opener.

Xion Culver scored the only touchdown for Canton South in the fourth quarter.

Parker Kraft shows off his all-purpose skills in Northwest Football win

Northwest 29, Norton 14

NORTON – Parker Kraft scored three different touchdowns to help Northwest open its season with a win over Norton.

Kraft kicked a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass from Chase Badger and ran for a touchdown. Carson Nickey also caught a touchdown from Tyler Pappas for Northwest. Ben Schanz rounded out the scoring for Northwest with a field goal.

Connor Finegan ran for two touchdowns for Norton.

Manchester wins thanks to Phil Partin and Yadin Sharp

Manchester 42, Coventry 0

: COVENTRY, TWP. — Phil Partin ran for three touchdowns to help the Panthers to a decisive victory over the Comets. One of Partin’s touchdowns was a 50-yard run.

Quarterback Yadin Sharp threw a touchdown pass and ran for a TD for Manchester.

Luke Miller leads Tusky Valley Football to home victory

Tusky Valley 41, Waynedale 35

ZOARVILLE — Tusky Valley’s Luke Miller intercepted a pass at the Trojans’ 5-yard line with less than 30 seconds left to play, helping the Trojans beat Waynedale. The interception came just moments after Miller threw the game-winning 23-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Bandy with 38 seconds left.

It was a great night for Miller, who threw four touchdown passes and ran for another to help Tusky Valley overcome a 29-13 deficit and win.

Diego Bautista also scored a touchdown for the Trojans with a 6-yard run.

At other soccer games in the Canton area

Mentor 36, Jackson 13

MENTOR — The host Cardinals led by one point at halftime and scored 22 unanswered points in the second half to pull away from the Polar Bears. No details were available.

Marlington 24, Warrensville Heights 12

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS — Marlington opened the season with a road win on Friday. Further details were not available.

United 27, Minerva 0

MINERVA — The Golden Eagles took control in the second half and handed the Lions their 30th direct loss. No further details were available.

Toronto 41, East Canton 0

EASTERN CANTON — The Red Knights beat the Hornets in the season opener for the second straight year. No details were available.

Carrollton 20, East Liverpool 13

OST-Liverpool — Carrollton opened the season with a road win over East Liverpool. Further details were not available.

Fairless keeps Sandy Valley at a distance

Fairless 21, Sandy Valley 14

MAGNOLIA – The Falcons defended their position at the goal line as time expired and secured their victory.

Fairless quarterback Mikey Ritterbeck threw two touchdown passes to Cam Carl to lead the offense. Carl caught a 31-yard pass in the second quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Ritterbeck later threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Carl in the fourth quarter to give the Falcons a decisive 21-7 lead.

Running back Peter Killy scored Fairless’ other touchdown on a 3-yard run in the third quarter, giving Fairless a 14-7 lead.

Killy ran for 85 yards on 20 attempts, while Ritterbeck completed 11 of 16 passes for 95 yards.

Sandy Valley QB Drew Graybill threw a touchdown and ran for a touchdown to put the Cardinals ahead. His 26-yard touchdown pass to Lukas Gilland opened the scoring in the second quarter. Graybill’s 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter cut his team’s deficit to 21-14.

Graybill completed 23 of 31 passes for 251 yards and ran for 44 yards on 14 attempts.

Sandy Valley beat Fairless 357-201, but three Cardinals turnovers proved costly. Fairless did not lose the ball on Thursday.
