Rob Gronkowski wants the Patriots to release Bailey Zappe

Rob Gronkowski may have hung up his boots, but his loyalty to the Patriots remains undiminished. Recently, the former tight end took a close look at the Patriots’ quarterback situation from a veteran’s perspective and spoke without hesitation about what he thinks should happen next. His first target was none other than Bailey Zappe.

During his appearance on FS1 “First things first” Gronk demanded that his former club cut ties with Bailey because the quarterback, in his third year, is taking up valuable time from up-and-coming talents like Drake Maye and Joe Milton.

Since this cannot continue until the start of the regular season, Gronk believes it is time for the Patriots to either let Zappe go or trade him so he can get a chance to shine with another team. He said:

“Bailey Zappe needs to be released… He’s taking reps away from Drake Maye and Joe Milton. Bailey Zappe will no longer be on the team at the end of training camp.”

However, Zappe’s performance in the Patriots’ season opener didn’t help him. Fans booed him as he took the field, wanting to see more of Maye, who only played six snaps. Even sixth-round rookie Milton impressed the crowd with his quarterback play.

Therefore, it is understandable why Gronkowski’s call for Zappe’s departure resonates with many fans who believe it is time to give younger quarterbacks more opportunities.

Gronkowski’s direct attitude triggers mixed reactions

Gronk has always been known for his direct manner, but this time his comment about Zappe caused a stir. While most agreed with the former tight end, some with a hint of sarcasm, others defended Zappe, a familiar face in Boston, arguing that the criticism of him was unjustified. Watch for yourself:

The timing of Gronk’s comments is notable. In the preseason game against the Panthers, Zappe had a mediocre performance. He entered the field in the first quarter and played until nearly the end of the third quarter.

As a replacement for Drake Maye, he managed to keep the Patriots in the game in the second quarter. While the opponents could not score any points, Joe Milton III came in and scored a few more points, leading to a 17-3 victory.
