Rolling lane closures planned to repair seawalls in Volusia County

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida. – Motorists should expect a “slight traffic shift” on SR A1A in Volusia County as workers begin repairing the second of two buried seawalls designed to protect the roadway, according to the Florida Department of Transportation

FDOT officials said work on the second wall, which stretches from Sunrise Avenue to Marlin Drive in Ormond-by-the-Sea, could begin as early as Sept. 3.

According to FDOT, construction of the first wall in Flagler Beach will begin in March 2024.

According to officials, the two buried seawalls extend approximately 2.5 miles along SR A1A and are intended to provide long-term protection from future storms and erosion.

According to a news release, workers will temporarily pave the southbound lanes of SR A1A to accommodate the slight shift in traffic.

Motorists should expect a rolling lane closure with flagging operations from north of Marlin Avenue to south of Sunrise Avenue during the day, officials said.

“The next steps in construction will be to remove vegetation from the dune and add sand to create a wide platform. Drilling of piles for the wall is expected to begin in the fall of this year,” the press release said.

According to FDOT, some dune crossings will be temporarily removed while work is being done on the seawalls. They will be reinstalled once work on each section of the wall is completed.

Beachgoers can access the beach via nearby walkways and the beach area in front of the wall is open to the public for use.

The authorities are asking the population to avoid the dunes and to pay attention to construction activities.
