Roosevelt narrowly wins against University on softball field

TUESDAY

Boys Golf

Windsor takes second place at Timnath: Windsor shot 6-over-par 294 in a 14-team Northern League No. 2 match at Harmony Club to finish second behind Fossil Ridge (276). Greeley West finished 12th (366).

Senior Kellen Ball led the Wizards, shooting 4-under-par 68 to finish second behind Fossil Ridge senior Austin Barry (59). Senior Tadese Keyworth (71, 5th) also played for Windsor, as did senior Dillon Calkins (75, 13th), senior Anderson Carr (80, 24th) and sophomore Bryce Homann (80, 24th).

Senior Corbin Suntych (85, 37th) played golf for Greeley West, as did sophomore Elliott Leffler (95, 56th), sophomore Eli Julich (93, 52nd), sophomore Chayse Thompson (93, 52nd) and junior Jaden Hernandez (97, 59th).

Boys football

Northridge 3, Prospect Ridge Academy 1, in Greeley: Northridge controlled its home game and improved its record to 1-1 on the young season. The Grizzlies led 1-0 at halftime before outscoring Prospect Ridge 2-1 in the second half.

Fort Collins 4, Greeley Central 0, in Fort Collins: Fort Collins scored two goals in each half to drop Greeley Central to 1-1 on the season.

The Classical Academy 7, Roosevelt 0, at Johnstown: Roosevelt couldn’t stop the Classical Academy offense, dropping the Rough Riders to 0-2 overall. The Titans scored four goals in the first period and three more in the second. Roosevelt’s first-year goalie, Brayden Richardson, had to stop eight shots.

Eagle Ridge Academy 5, Valley 1, at Gilcrest: Valley scored its only goal in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with Eagle Ridge’s potent offense, dropping the Vikings to 0-2 on the season.

Bishop Machebeuf 9, Windsor Charter 1, at Denver: Windsor Charter couldn’t slow down Machebeuf’s powerful offense, dropping the Firebirds to 0-1-1. Sophomore Porter Davis scored the Rebels’ lone goal. The Buffaloes scored four goals in the first half and five more in the second.

Soft ball

Roosevelt 8, University 7, at Johnstown: Roosevelt rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win this non-conference game in dramatic fashion. Junior Rozlynn Muguerza led the Rough Riders, batting 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs. Roosevelt senior Brooke McNeil and junior Molly Vetter each had two RBIs. Senior Ellie Baca led the University, batting 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a double. The Rough Riders improved to 2-0 overall. The Bulldogs fell to 2-4.

Severance 5, Northridge 4, 8 innings, at Greeley: Severance narrowly held on to Northridge, scoring the game-winning run in the eighth inning. The two teams traded runs throughout the game. The Silver Knights took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning before the Grizzlies answered with a run in the seventh inning to force extra innings. Severance beat Northridge 11-7. The Silver Knights remained undefeated, improving their record to 5-0-1 overall and 1-0 in 4A/3A Longs Peak play. The Grizzlies fell to 2-1, 1-1.

Eaton 15, Berthoud 4, at Berthoud: Eaton remained undefeated this season, improving its record to 6-0. Five Reds players had multiple RBIs. Sophomore Emma Anderson led the way, going 4 for 5, two RBIs, three runs and a double. Sophomore Isabella Ramsey hit 2 for 4, two runs and a home run. Eaton sophomore Johanna Galvan was solid in the pitching circle, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out nine and not allowing a walk.

Greeley West 19, Poudre 0, 3 innings, at Greeley: Greeley West’s sparkling start to the season continued as the Spartans improved their record to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the 5A/4A Northern Conference and earned their fifth straight win. West outscored Poudre 11-1. Sophomore Ariana Holguin led the Spartans’ offense with five RBIs, a run and a triple on 2-of-3 hitting. Seniors Lucy Stenner-Roy and Ellyse Hydock each had three RBIs, three runs, two hits and a home run. Hydock had a perfect three-inning effort in the pitcher’s circle, striking out seven strikeouts.

Centaurus 8, Fort Lupton 7, at Lafayette: Fort Lupton’s losing streak extended to four games in the closest of scores. The Bluedevils fell to 3-4 overall, 2-1 in 4A/3A Frontier League play.

Timnath 17, Weld Central 16, at Timnath: Weld Central fell just short in this high-scoring non-league game. The Rebels took an 8-4 lead in the second but couldn’t hold off Timnath. Weld Central senior Jordin Sifuentes led the Rebels’ strong offense with five RBIs, three runs, a double and a triple on 4 of 5 hitting. Weld Central fell to 2-5 overall.

Boys tennis

University 5, Prospect Ridge Academy 2, in Broomfield: University won all three singles matches and two of four doubles matches. Bulldogs senior Matthew Chambers secured an impressive win at No. 1 singles, defeating junior Ayden Nguyen 6-3, 6-2. University improved to 2-1 in doubles.

Mountain View 5, Greeley Central 2, at Loveland: Greeley Central failed to win a singles match, but the Wildcats won two of four doubles matches. In the toughest match of the matchup, Greeley Central’s duo of senior Reese Weilnau and sophomore Witt Mathews defeated junior Joshua Nierman and senior Tristan Galles 1-6, 6-2, 7-5. The Wildcats dropped to 1-2 in non-conference play with the loss.

Thompson Valley 7, Northridge 0, at Greeley: Northridge failed to win a game or a set in this 4A Region 4 loss. In perhaps the most competitive game of the matchup, Grizzlies juniors Ethan Hubbard and Ethan Wahlmeier lost to fellow juniors Bode Tartaglia and Bradyn Cronin 6-3, 6-1. Northridge fell to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in regional play.

Poudre 5, Windsor 2, at Fort Collins: Windsor picked up two big wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but couldn’t secure the dual meet. Wizards senior Dillon Henson defeated fellow senior Finley Hickman 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Windsor senior Layne Tometich defeated senior Miki Mijiddorj 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. The Wizards fell to 1-2 overall, 0-2 in 5A Northern Conference play.

Girls volleyball

Eaton 3, Windsor 1, at Windsor: Longtime 3A contender Eaton opened its season with an impressive win over a perennial 4A contender. The Reds won 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 26-24, which was Windsor’s season opener. Eaton is ranked No. 2 in 3A, according to CHSAANow.com, while the Wizards are ranked No. 4 in 4A.

Roosevelt 3, Northridge 0, at Johnstown: Roosevelt opened its season with a strong 4A/5A Longs Peak League sweep, 25-9, 25-12, 25-19. Senior Leah Inlow led the Rough Riders with 16 kills. Roosevelt junior Braelyn Bailey added 33 assists, eight kills, two aces and 11 digs. Northridge fell to 0-3 overall, 0-1 in 4A/5A Longs Peak play.

Severance 3, Windsor Charter 1, at Severance: Severance secured a hard-fought non-league match, 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22. The Silver Knights improved to 2-0 overall. Windsor Charter fell to 4-1.

University 3, Riverdale Ridge 0, in Greeley: University secured its second sweep in as many games to start the season, prevailing 25-10, 25-12, 25-15. Freshman Delaney Lauer led the Bulldogs in kills with eight. Sophomore Shylee Dyess added 12 digs.

Frontier Academy 3, Highland 2, in Ault: Frontier Academy narrowly defeated Highland in this dramatic non-league game. The Wolverines improved to 3-2 overall. The Huskies fell to 1-4.

Greeley Central 3, Northglenn 0, at Northglenn: Greeley Central improved its season record to 2-0 with this 25-18, 25-20, 25-7 victory. Junior Kneena Grigsby led the Wildcats with 16 kills and seven digs. Senior Kimberly Garman added 28 assists and three aces.

Fort Lupton 3, Silver Creek 1, in Longmont: Fort Lupton opened its season with a quality non-league win, prevailing 25-16, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18. Senior Dani Aviles led the Bluedevils with 11 kills, two aces and 11 digs. Junior Destini Alarcon had 20 assists, 12 digs and three aces.

Skyline 3, Greeley West 1, at Greeley: Greeley West briefly tied the game at one set before Skyline came back strong and won 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20. The Spartans fell to 0-2 overall.
