Rutland Hall Hotel is carrying out a leak repair after discovering that enough water was being lost each day to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool

A hotel which was losing enough water every day to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool has undertaken a major leak repair project which will save thousands of pounds.

Andrew Barnes, property manager at Rutland Hall Hotel, first noticed unusually high water consumption about 12 months ago.

This led to an investigation which revealed that the water meter was defective.

“I took immediate action,” Andrew said.

“When the meter was reactivated at 2am, it showed an alarming water consumption of 6,000 litres per hour – despite minimal activity on the hotel premises at that time.”

Further investigations confirmed that water was being lost due to leaks. The daily amount of water was an incredible 144 cubic metres – the equivalent of the volume of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The financial impact of this leak was approximately £450 per day and £164,250 annually.

Through data analysis, Andy, along with Richard Scott, Director of Avon Water Services, were able to trace the origin of the water loss back over seven years.

By isolating and repairing five key leaks, the team has now successfully reduced water loss by £370 per day.

The savings achieved through this project have already covered the cost of the repair work carried out by Avon Water Services in 95 days.

Molly Tomlin, the hotel’s Business Development Manager and Sustainability Lead, said: “This project is testament to Rutland Hall Hotel’s commitment to sustainability.

“Not only have we made significant progress in reducing our environmental impact, but we have also demonstrated the importance of proactive maintenance and vigilant resource management.”
