Saints welcome top defender to visit free agent

The New Orleans Saints have a talented defense that could get even better with the signing of someone like Justin Simmons. The 30-year-old is arguably the best free agent left on the board. The Broncos released the 30-year-old as they embarked on the inevitable rebuild after the failed Russell Wilson experiment. Since then, the two-time Pro Bowler has been waiting out the saturated safety market while looking for a new home. That new home could be in New Orleans, as Nick Underhill recently reported that Simmons is visiting the Saints.

Saints welcome Justin Simmons for a visit as a free agent

Justin Simmons is no longer the safety he was in the late 2010s, but the longtime veteran is still a reliable playmaker who should fit seamlessly into the Saints’ defense. A starter last year and appearing in 15 games, the Boston College product finished the season with three interceptions, eight passes defensed, two forced fumbles, 70 tackles and two tackles for loss. Those numbers earned him a spot in the Pro Bowl, as he finished with a PFF grade of 67.9, the 42nd best grade out of 95 eligible players.

New Orleans could use a player like him, as the team has yet to find an adequate replacement for Marcus Maye. Given the questionable status of their offensive line, the Saints likely need to win games with defense, and Justin Simmons can go a long way toward accomplishing that goal. Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo form one of the better cornerback duos in the league, while second-round pick Kool-Aid McKinstry shows promise. Tyrann Mathieu may no longer be a superstar, but he’s still a good safety. If New Orleans can fill the gap at the second safety position, they should have one of the better secondaries in the league.

The biggest obstacle here might be money. The Saints have $11.8 million in salary space, so they should be able to afford Justin Simmons. However, they are projected to be $91.6 million over the salary cap in 2025, so they need to make sure this deal doesn’t have long-term consequences. If New Orleans signs the veteran, it likely won’t be more than a one-year deal.
