Samford Football trains on new field for first time ahead of 2024 season

HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WBRC) – As you walk past Pete Hanna Stadium, you may hear ongoing construction noises as the finishing touches are put on the new field.

The Samford soccer program practiced on the new artificial turf field for the first time Thursday morning. The team had done a few walk-throughs of the new surface before, but this was the first time they suited up and got to work.

“We’re tired of driving across the street and squeezing into buses every morning,” said Samford football head coach Chris Hatcher. “So coming here has kind of refreshed the guys.”

Previously, the Bulldogs practiced on the athletic fields not far from the Samford campus. Classes begin this week as fall camp comes to a close with some questions still to be answered.

Hatcher did not want to name a starting quarterback between Quincy Crittendon and Nik Scalzo, but the Bulldogs boss believes that both options can help the team win many games.

“We’re just looking for a guy that’s super consistent every day and can go out and make the routine plays, and we feel like we have a couple of guys that have performed well,” Hatcher said. “And with any of those guys that we put in the game, we can do a good job of leading our team to a win.”

Whoever starts at quarterback will be tested early. The Bulldogs are on the road for their first two games of the season, the first against West Georgia, a former top Division II team that now plays in Division I.

After Week 1, Samford heads to the Swamp to face the Florida Gators before returning home to make its debut on the new field against Alabama State on Sept. 14.
