Sandpipers: 16-year-old Gabriel Manteufel breaks top 20 times in 200m freestyle and 400m individual medley in LA

Gabriel Manteufel placed in the top 20 of the national age group (NAG) rankings in both the 200-meter freestyle and 400-meter individual medley at the Summer Age Group Championships last month at the Mt. SAC Aquatics Center in Walnut, California.

The 16-year-old Sandpipers of Nevada posted a personal best of 1:50.01 in the 200-meter freestyle, beating his previous best of 1:52.71 by more than two seconds, and ranks 17th in the all-time NAG rankings for U.S. boys 15-16.

Manteufel swam another historically great time in the 400m individual medley with a time of 4:21.93, more than four seconds faster than his previous best time of 4:26.12 from April. He is now ranked 18th all-time in his age group.

Manteufel also won the 200m breaststroke (2:21.83) and took second place in the 100m freestyle (51.87) and the 200m individual medley (2:08.88). He improved his previous best time in the 200m breaststroke of 2:26.01 from last October by more than four seconds.

Sandpiper 17 years old Luke Ellis couldn’t beat Manteufel in the 200 m freestyle with his personal best of 1:50.70, but still took four individual victories and eight personal bests. The Indiana player (’25) won the 100 m backstroke (57.40), 200 m backstroke (2:01.18), 200 m butterfly (2:01.37) and 200 m individual medley (2:04.35). Ellis beat his previous best in the 200 m backstroke of 2:01.35 from last July and beat his previous best in the 100 m backstroke of 59.48 from last January. In the 200 m butterfly he beat his personal best by more than three seconds.

Sandpiper 15 years old Allen Gyang took the victory in the 100 m freestyle in 51.30 ahead of Manteufel with 51.87. He beat his previous best time of 51.47 from May by 0.17 seconds. Gyang achieved three more personal bests in the 100 m butterfly (55.82), 50 m freestyle (23.52) and 200 m freestyle (1:52.70) and beat his previous best time of 56.60 from April in the 100 m butterfly by almost a second.

Summary for girls

Aquazot Swimming Club, 11 years old Lyric Radke She showed her versatility with wins in the 50m butterfly (30.55) and 200m individual medley (2:35.09), a second place in the 100m freestyle (1:02.67) and a third place in the 100m backstroke (1:11.75). She lost almost a second in the 50m butterfly and almost two seconds in the 200m individual medley compared to her previous bests from May.

Aquazot Swimming Club 12 years Taylor Jones took the crown in the 100m freestyle ahead of Radke in 1:02.31, just one second under her personal best of 1:01.62 from early July. She improved her time in the 400m freestyle by 11 seconds (4:41.98) and recorded two more victories in the 200m freestyle (2:14.11) and 100m butterfly (1:09.01).

The 400-meter freestyle for over 15s developed into an exciting battle between the teammates of the Sandpipers of Nevada Lucy Warnick (4:24.52) and Riley Christensen (4:24.32). Warnick, an 18-year-old BYU freshman (’24), improved her previous best of 4:35.12 from last April by more than 10 seconds, but Christensen escaped the title by a few tenths. Christensen, 15, improved her previous best of 4:26.34 from April by a few seconds. Warnick went on to top the 200 medley (2:20.47) and 400 medley (4:53.14) personal bests, improving her previous bests from last July by one and three seconds, respectively.

Aquazot Swimming Club 10 years old Tina Tang She continued to lose time in the 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle, despite having set her personal bests just the week before. She clocked a time of 35.05 in the 50m backstroke, improving her previous best by several tenths, while in the 100m freestyle she set a personal best of 1:05.73. Tang was more than half a second faster than her previous best of 1:06.37 from the previous week. She also secured victories in the 50m freestyle (30.57), 100m backstroke (1:17.38), 50m butterfly (33.52) and 100m butterfly (1:15.88), not far off her best times.

Brea Aquatics 13 years old Adalyn Lee recorded a number of notable personal bests. She posted times of 1:06.70 in the 100m backstroke, 2:07.06 in the 200m freestyle, 59.93 in the 100m freestyle and 4:26.77 in the 400m freestyle. She lost more than four seconds in the 200m freestyle and almost three seconds in the 400m freestyle.

Sandpiper 15 years old Emery Vannah earned two second-place finishes in the 100m butterfly (1:02.60) and 100m backstroke (1:06.56). She was more than a second faster than her previous best in the 100m butterfly of 1:03.72 from June, but narrowly missed the title behind rising UCSD sophomore Asia Kozan (1:02.24). Vannah improved her 100-meter backstroke PB by nearly a second, but still finished about half a second behind Rose Bowl Aquatics Aly Yokoyama (1:06.03).
