Santa Clara County veterans can hail a cab for free – The Mercury News

Free taxis for veterinarians

Veterans in Santa Clara County can benefit from Yellow Cab of Silicon Valley’s free taxi rides to medical appointments, job interviews, employment services, school or educational events, and other important appointments.

The free ride program is thanks to a micro-grant from Santa Clara County Executive Otto Lee’s office to the Silicon Valley chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, which coordinates the rides with the county’s Veterans Services office. The first grant was for $5,000, and a second grant, which has yet to be approved, will provide another $5,000.

“Our veterans must have access to the services and resources they have earned through their service with us,” said Lee, whose district includes Milpitas. “A rideshare should not be a barrier for veterans to see a doctor, attend class or get involved in their community.”

Call the county Office of Veterans Services at 408-918-4980 to schedule a ride.

Flags, trucks in the Great Mall

Great Mall Milpitas will celebrate India’s Independence Day from August 15-17 by distributing India’s flag throughout the mall while supplies last.

On Saturday, August 24, the Great Mall will host a “Touch A Truck” event. Kids of all ages can check out equipment from the Milpitas Police and Fire Departments, American Medical Response, Public Works and Sanitation and more. Game Action will park a video game truck at the mall and Legoland Discovery Center Bay Area will host a meet and greet with firefighter Freya. There will also be free giveaways from Dave and Buster’s.
