This school year marks the 150th graduation from Honesdale High School for the class of 2025.

Gregory Frigoletto, superintendent of the Wayne Highlands School District, reported that there will also be 13 new teachers in the 2024-2025 school year and announced the district’s musical program for the public to enjoy.

Classes will resume on August 26.

Frigoletto explained that no new curriculum or extracurricular elements would be introduced for the new school year, but that high-quality programs for students would be maintained in many areas of the district.

However, there are plenty of new faces that students will greet when they return to class. At Lakeside Elementary School, Sandra Rickard takes the reins as principal, succeeding Patrick Blaskiewicz, who has retired. Rickard previously served as assistant principal at the high school.

Donald Cook is the new assistant principal at Honesdale High School. Frigoletto said this is Cook’s first administrative job and he is “ready for the challenge” as he worked for many years as a middle school math teacher.

Due to recent retirements, 13 new teachers and eight support staff have been hired, he said.

Frigoletto expressed excitement about the calendar of school musicals. These and the sporting events, he noted, not only showcase the abilities of the students, but also provide the public, many of whom may not have a child or grandchild in the district, an opportunity to engage with the local school district. Musicals scheduled include:

  • Honesdale High School: “Matilda the Musical.” February 14, 15 and 16.
  • Wayne Highlands Middle School: “Disney’s Finding Nemo Jr.” November 22 and 23.
  • Damascus Area School: “Ebenezer’s Christmas Carol.” December 6 and 7.
  • Preston Area School: “Seussical JR.” November 22nd and 23rd.

This summer, Preston School underwent paving work and replaced the floor in the middle school gymnasium.

As they prepare to reopen schools, Frigoletto said they are committed to staying true to their mission, which is summarized as the “Wayne Highlands Way.” That includes, he said, making sure everything they do is student-centered, fostering a culture of respect and knowing they must always improve for students and as professionals.
