Western Digital has introduced its new SD card with a whopping 8 TB storage capacity. And as if that wasn’t enough, the company’s SanDisk subsidiary is also preparing a tiny microSD card with 4 TB storage capacity.

The days of needing a bulky external hard drive to carry around a huge collection of files are almost over.

8TB SD card from SanDisk on the way

Apple has not built SD or microSD slots into iPhone and iPad, but that doesn’t mean these memory cards aren’t supported. Mac Studio and MacBook Pro have an SDXC card slot. And almost all Apple computers, including iPhone and iPad, can use the cards with adapters.

The maximum SD card available on the market today is 2 terabytes, but Western Digital committed this spring to launching a 4 TB card through its subsidiary SanDisk, although it is not expected to be available until 2025.

And that’s not all: SanDisk recently unveiled an 8TB SD card at the Future Of Memory And Storage Conference in California. However, Western Digital has not provided any information on when it might be available to customers or how much it will cost when it does.

If you need a lot of storage capacity in an even smaller format, you can look forward to a SanDisk 4TB microSD card. However, there is no planned launch date or price for this product. It could even be 2026.

Both cards support UHS-I, which enables data transfers of up to 104 Mbps and 13 Mbps respectively. That’s fast enough for 8K video recording.

According to Western Digital, these cards are suitable for “tomorrow’s smartphones, gaming devices, drones, cameras and laptops.”
