Having a child is a gift, no matter what age, but childbirth can be painful and exhausting, and that doesn’t necessarily change when the hospital bill arrives in the mail.
According to Health System Tracker, the average cost of pregnancy, delivery and postpartum care without insurance can be as high as $19,000.
In some states, however, you don’t have to spend a fortune to have a child. A study by WalletHub looks at all 50 states and ranks the best and worst states to have a child.

How does Ohio rank as a state for having a child?
WalletHub considered four key dimensions – cost, healthcare ranking, baby-friendliness and family-friendliness – across 31 metrics to create this ranking.
Unfortunately, Ohio is not one of the best states to have a child. With a score of 49.46 out of 100, it ranks 29th in the country.
The Buckeye State ranked in the top 10 in cost, coming in at number 9. It ranked 26th in health care, 30th in family friendliness, and 40th in baby friendliness.
Ohio was neither in the top five nor the bottom five states for the cost of cesarean sections, conventional deliveries, annual infant care costs, infant mortality rate, number of gynecologists per capita, and other categories.
Rankings in the Midwest: How Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan performed
The best state in the Midwest to have a baby is Illinois, which ranks 19th, making it into the top 20 best states.
Between Illinois and Ohio, Wisconsin ranks 22nd, Pennsylvania ranks 24th, and Michigan ranks 28th.
Kentucky (32nd place), Indiana (39th place) and West Virginia (45th place) are among the states with the worst conditions for giving birth, behind Ohio.
