The trailer for Emilia Perez has been released – and its star, Selena Gomez, is practically unrecognizable.
For her role in the film, Gomez sports a bold, wavy blonde bob that reaches just above her chin and is worn with a millennial side part. Gomez gave her fans a glimpse of the hairstyle back in June 2023 with an Instagram post. It’s a whole new look for Gomez, who has been rocking a long, dark brown look in real life and on her Hulu show lately Only murders in the buildingwhose fourth season premiered today.

Gomez shared the trailer on Instagram, writing: “From renegade auteur Jacques Audiard comes @emiliaperezfilm, a bold fever dream that defies genre and expectations. EMILIA PÉREZ is in select theaters this fall and on @Netflix in the US, UK and Canada on November 13th.”
Emilia Perez, a musical crime drama, is Gomez’s first Spanish-speaking role. “The scariest thing was definitely speaking Spanish,” she confessed Vanity Fair.
She plays Jessi, the wife of Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón), the leader of a Mexican cartel. “At the beginning of the film, Jessi is very happy with the life she leads with her family in Mexico, and that’s where her roots are,” Gomez told Netflix’ Tudum her role. “I think she gets so confused when there’s a sudden movement and she doesn’t know what to do.”

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and Gomez arrived at the premiere wearing a ruffled red dress. Gomez and the film’s other two female stars, Zaldana and Gascón, took home the Best Actress award at the festival.
For Gomez, Emilia Perez is a very special project. “I have spent a large part of my life breaking the conventions and perceptions of who I am,” she said The Hollywood Reporter, adding, “Jacques, who really didn’t know anything about me, took a chance and believed in me just because of what I could do, and that was really special for me. I think that’s a really big deal, and I choose projects based on the filmmaker, the content, the meaning, all of that.”
This is not the first time Gomez has worn blonde locks; she bleached her hair in 2017 and again in 2021.
