Sequence of the week – How to get the attention of your new sponsor

Chaotic – that’s probably the nicest word to describe this weekend’s Powerboat P1-produced Super Stock and Super Cat entries at the Midwest Challenge in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The bad news was broken boats, at least in the Super Stock incident. The good news, of course, was that there were no broken bodies.

And the good news? Most racers in both fleets had the common sense and self-control to avoid blame games on social media.

The last race of the weekend belonged to the Super Cat fleet, and not long after the flag was raised yesterday afternoon, SV Offshore/Austin Homes Super Cat Owned by Wisconsin-based Vinnie Diorio, who pilots the catamaran with driver Matt Jamniczky, his 39-foot Outerlimits catamaran was at exactly the wrong angle.

Not only was Diorio defending his home turf, the Midwest Challenge was also his first with his new sponsor on board. A wheelie in front of the sponsor is one thing, especially when his name is written large on both sides of the hull. But a back loop? Not so much.

Up, up and almost gone.

Fortunately, the catamaran landed sunny side up.

When asked what happened after the race, Diorio kept it casual – another smart move with a new backer on the scene. “Turn 1 got a little tight,” he said in perhaps the most understated statement of the week. “No damage to the boat. No, everything’s fine.”
