NEW YORK (AP) — Luis Severino pitched a four-hitter for his second career shutout. The New York Mets got home runs from Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso in their 4-0 win Saturday over the Miami Marlins.
After losing his last three games, Severino (8-6) had the last-place Marlins completely under control on a rainy afternoon at Citi Field, striking out eight players and walking one in the first shutout by a Mets starter since Jacob deGrom shut out Washington in April 2021.
Severino’s only other complete game in the major leagues was a five-hit shutout for the New York Yankees in Houston in May 2018.
The right-hander hit Jake Burger with his first pitch in the ninth inning, prompting a visit from manager Carlos Mendoza. But after a discussion on the mound, Mendoza left Severino in the game to loud cheers from the 34,744 spectators.
He struck out the next three batters and ended the game with a spectacular roar, screaming and pumping his fist at Derek Hill after striking him out with his 113th pitch – the most hits by a Mets player this season.
New York won only the second consecutive game this month. The Mets began the day one game behind Atlanta, securing the National League’s final wild card.
Lindor hit the seventh pitch from Miami starter Max Meyer (3-3) into right-center field for his second home run of the year and the 20th of his career. Alonso hit a home run in the second inning and the Mets scored in each of the first four innings for the first time since May 1995 against San Francisco.
Brandon Nimmo tripled in the third inning and scored on a two-out RBI single by Jesse Winker on his 31st birthday. Lindor walked with two outs in the fourth inning and scored on a Mark Vientos double.
Severino came in handy when the Marlins got caught in an uncharacteristic double play in the third inning. Miami has lost six of eight games.
Meyer allowed four runs and six hits in four innings. He has a 7.99 ERA in 23 1/3 innings since being recalled from the minors on July 27.

Nimmo chased Kyle Stowers’ sinking liner in the seventh inning and caught it on a sliding catch in left field. Severino stood with his hands raised to acknowledge the catch and stayed near the mound until Nimmo reached him so he could say something directly to the outfielder.
