Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 Plymouth Argyle: Wayne Rooney’s tenure at Argyle begins with a heavy loss

Plymouth Argyle head coach Wayne Rooney told BBC Radio Devon:

“I am disappointed, angry, surprised.

“After everything we saw from the players during pre-season, today was a surprise for me.

“We knew it was important to get through the first 20 minutes and then try to bring some composure and calm into the game, but we didn’t manage to do that.”

“I think the fundamentals of the game were not good enough today and that is not acceptable to me.

“Whether it’s getting the ball, tackling, being aggressive and staying with the runners – we knew Sheffield Wednesday were one of the best teams in the league last season at crossing and backpassing and it was four goals from crossing and backpassing, which is something we’ve worked on a lot all week, so I’m really disappointed.”

Danny Rohl, head coach of Sheffield Wednesday, told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“For me, the big result of the last six weeks was that we are fit, that we can run, that we played good football with the ball and were very strong against it.

“It was an outstanding performance, but I think this is only the first step – after six weeks you never know where you really stand.”

“We talked a lot during the week about how we defend. The ball was a big topic. But our basic principles are to always play against the ball and be ready to defend as a team and attack as a team. That was good to see.”

“We have shown many right things, but nothing more. Today everyone can smile, we can enjoy it, but tomorrow we start all over again.”
